Q: Are all natural slates the same?
A: No, natural slates vary greatly in terms of quality and durability. There are a few guidelines you should follow when sourcing natural slates. You should only source natural slates from reputable suppliers who have a track record in this field and who will be around in the future to deal with any issues which may arise. You should also ensure that the slate you are buying conforms to the standards laid down for natural slate, if necessary you should ask for a copy of this certification. You should know exactly what slate you are buying, what is the country and quarry of origin, how long has it been used in Ireland, where can you see it on a roof. In general you will find that you will get what you pay for, so if you buy a cheap natural slate be advised that there is a reason it is cheap, you may be buying a problem in the years to come.

Q: What are the main pitfalls I should be aware of when sourcing my roofing materials?
A: There are a number of issues which may arise but the most common ones we have encountered are:
(1) Insufficient or no ventilation in your roof can lead to condensation which has the potential to lead to serious problems if left unchecked. The best way to avoid this is to use a top quality breather membrane such as Tyvek.
(2) Natural slates discolouring, 'spalling' (flaking) on a roof, holes appearing etc. There are just some of the issues which can occur if poor quality natural slates are used. To avoid these problems the advice given above should be followed.
(3) Guarantees are always an issue. To protect yourself from problems with guarantees in the future you should only deal with reputable suppliers who can prove that the products they supply carry a manufacturer backed guarantee. All manufacturer backed guarantees should be available in writing to you from the manufacturer.
(4) Only use products on your roof which conform to the relevant standards laid down for the product. Remember there is a reason for these standards, and that all products on your roof are going to be exposed to the best and worst that the Irish weather has to throw at them over many years.
